Kyle Hendricks, who won a World Series ring with the Chicago Cubs in 2016, will face his former team for the first time Sunday. Hendricks, who signed with the Los Angeles Angels over the offseason, is scheduled to start Sunday’s series finale, and will take the ball against the team where he played for the first 11 seasons of his big-league career.
The Cubs acquired Hendricks in a 2012 trade with the Rangers that sent Ryan Dempster to Texas. He ultimately made his MLB debut in the 2014 season, finishing in seventh place in Rookie of the Year voting. Hendricks’ 2016 season was undoubtedly his best, as he had a record of 16-8 and an ERA of 2.13. He finished third in Cy Young voting and had the distinction of starting Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, pitching 7.1 innings as the Cubs captured their first pennant since 1945. He also started Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, giving up one earned run in 4.2 innings as the Cubs won their first title in 108 years.After the 2024 season, Hendricks, who was the lone remaining member of the 2016 World Series squad on the roster, was allowed to hit free agency, and signed with the Angels in November 2024.Hendricks has struggled in his first season in Anaheim, with a 6-8 record and a 4.93 ERA in 24 starts. He has 85 strikeouts in 126 innings.
