Mobile native Phil Savage is stepping into an interim role after the NFL team fired Joe Douglas on Tuesday.

announcing Douglas’ termination said Savage would serve as New York’s interim general manager for the remainder of the 2024 NFL season.New York fired coach Robert Saleh on Oct. 8, when the Jets had a 2-3 record in his fourth season. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich became the interim head coach. On their open date this week, the Jets will carry a 3-8 record into their game against the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 1. Douglas became the New York general manager in 2019, and the Jets have posted a 30-64 record during his tenure. A Murphy High School alumnus, Savage is a member of the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame and served as the executive director of the Senior Bowl, the Port City’s annual college all-star game, from 2012 through 2018. Savage worked as the color analyst alongside play-by-play announcer Eli Gold on the Crimson Tide Sports Network’s radio broadcasts offootball games from the 2009 season through the 2017 campaign. Savage began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Alabama in 1987, then served as the Crimson Tide’s tight-ends coach for two seasons before moving on to UCLA. Savage entered the NFL in 1991 as a defensive assistant with the Cleveland Browns, who had Saban as their defensive coordinator. Savage stayed with the franchise after it moved to Baltimore and eventually became the Ravens’ director of college scouting and director of player personnel.
