CINCINNATI — A former general manager of the Indianapolis Colts has died.the Cincinnati Bengals announced FridayPrior to his tenure as Colts GM, Tobin attended the University of Missouri where he played football. He was drafted in 1963 by the San Francisco 49ers, but ended up playing for the Houston Oilers in the American Football League for one season. He later played for the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League.

After his playing career, Tobin became involved with the Chicago Bears organization, becoming the general manager in 1987. After leaving the Bears organization in 1992, he joined the Colts in 1994 as the general manager and was responsible for drafting future Hall of Famers Marshall Faulk and Marvin Harrison.

Tobin was replaced by Bill Polian as Colts GM in 1997 and finished his NFL executive career in 2002 after serving as the Detroit Lions' director of player personnel for two seasons. Most recently, Tobin worked with the Cincinnati Bengals where his son Duke is currently the director of personnel. to remember Tobin, writing in part:"Bill was a tough, old-time football man, starting as a player in the old AFL. He lived a magical life associated with the game he loved, and our league will miss him."
