A former coffee plant site in southwest Adams County will be transformed into a five-story affordable housing development with a new coffee shop and community meeting space.
Brothers Douglass and Jason Barrow, owners of Luna Coffee, are spearheading a unique development project in southwest Adams County . After their beloved Boyer\'s Coffee plant was destroyed by a fire in 2020, they decided to repurpose the land for a community-centric development.
The plan involves constructing a five-story apartment building on the former coffee plant site, incorporating remnants of a nearly century-old brick schoolhouse that had been converted into a coffeehouse and community gathering space. While the schoolhouse itself is beyond repair, its nostalgic essence will be preserved through the building's design. \The development, led by Maikers Housing Partners, will include 117 affordable apartments and a brand-new coffee shop, fulfilling the Barrow brothers' desire to maintain a retail presence at the location. The project is being funded in part by Adams County, which purchased the land using federal pandemic recovery funds. The county is aiming to make the development a catalyst for revitalizing the North Washington area. \The project has garnered significant community support, with residents expressing enthusiasm for the inclusion of both a coffee shop and a public meeting space. The building's design will integrate these elements, reflecting the community's vision. Maikers faces some challenges, including uncertainties surrounding grant funding and potential tariffs on construction materials sourced from Canada. However, they remain committed to delivering a high-quality development that meets the needs of the community. Construction is slated to begin in summer 2026, with an estimated completion time of 18 months.
