Jacqueline Ma was honored in 2022 for her work as a sixth grade teacher.

A California educator who was previously honored as “Teacher of the Year” pleaded guilty Wednesday to sexual misconduct involving two minors.

Jacqueline Ma was arrested in 2023 over accusations she had engaged in sexual relationships with the minors, both students at the time,reported. Prosecutors reportedly alleged she exchanged inappropriate messages and photos with the students, as well as once took off her shirt after asking one student for a private meeting in her classroom.

The San Diego County District Attorney’s office told The National News Desk Friday Ma pleaded guilty to oral copulation and sexual intercourse with a minor student. She also admitted to causing another student to touch themselves and to possessing matter depicting a minor in sexual conduct.The San Diego County Office of Education in 2022 honored Ma, then a sixth grade teacher, for her work at Lincoln Acres Elementary School in National City, California.

“I can’t imagine a more qualified and passionate educator to receive this honor,” Lincoln Acres Principal Kathy Melanese said at the time. “The creativity, initiative, collaboration, and 100% dedication Ms. Ma has for her students and the school is immeasurable.
