A former Berea-Midpark High School student who was sexually assaulted and hazed at a varsity football camp at Case Western Reserve University in 2019 has sued the district, his former teammates and coaches, as well as several district officials.
A former Berea-Midpark High School football play who was sexually assaulted as part of hazing incident during a summer football camp at a Case Western Reserve University dormitory has filed a lawsuit.CLEVELAND, Ohio --
The district’s superintendent, Tracy Wheeler, varsity football coach, Jon Hanuk, and athletics director, William Boone, are among the 19 defendants named in the complaint that accuses the Berea City School District and its officials of violating the former player’s civil rights. The lawsuit said that the district was aware of problems with the team’s culture before the camp. Several of the team’s plays were named after pornographic magazines, including Playboy and Penthouse, and the board noted in one of Hanuk’s performance reviews that he needed to address the weight room culture, the complaint said.
The complaint said that one night during the camp, several players began yelling threats out of dormitory windows at the former player, and he tried to get back to his room to escape the threats. On his way, the players forced him into a room that they had set up as a hazing ritual, the complaint said. The group held him down and brought in another student and made the plaintiff watch the group haze that boy, the complaint said. The group then assaulted him with a sex toy.
“Had CWRU or any of the coaching staff attempted to locate the source of the disturbances that were reported by others, they would have gone to the room where Plaintiff and other victims were being held against their will and could have stopped the life altering events that occurred over three nights at the camp,” the lawsuit said.
