A former accountant has been sentenced to three years in jail after using his privileges as the treasurer of a regional Victorian golf club to steal almost half a million dollars in two-and-a-half years.Bendigo man Travis Austerberry pleaded guilty to the offending, which happened between April 2020 and November 2022
The court heard Austerberry covertly made some repayments to the golf club before his offending was detected.Austerberry started playing at the club in 2016 and became a committee member the following year."It was your good character that enabled you to commit these offences," Judge Geoffrey Chettle told Austerberry.
Mr Brancato said his client started using the other volunteer's login details while she was still in the position, and then continued after she had left. The court heard the 40-year-old had been addicted to gambling for 20 years, after starting as a teenager.Court documents show Austerberry did return some of the money from his personal account to the ATO, which would then be 'refunded' back to the golf club, in an effort to pay some of the money back.Mr Brancato said his client wanted to pay the golf club back.Members of the golf club were "shaken" by Austerberry's actions, the court heard.
Austerberry was sentenced to a three-year term of imprisonment with a non-parole period of two years.
