A former Bay Area youth swim coach, David Teel, 57, has been sentenced to three years in prison after accepting a plea deal with prosecutors. Teel pleaded no contest to two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, both felonies. As part of the deal, dozens of other sex abuse counts were dropped. The abuse occurred in the early 2000s, but the victim didn't report it until 2019 out of fear her identity would be revealed.
She testified in 2022 that Teel sexually abused her up to four times a day during swim lessons. Teel was banned from coaching by a national swim organization in 2010 after the victim reported him. He had moved to Boston when he was charged and spent 32 days in jail before the plea deal. With good behavior, he can reduce his sentence by half
