Every living former prime minister of Australia, except Paul Keating, signed a statement supporting Israel's right to defence in response to the October 7 terrorist attack. Shadow foreign affairs minister Simon Birmingham urges the Albanese government to take a firm stance on the Israel and Hamas war.

The statement was signed by John Howard, Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, Tony Abbott, Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison – every living former prime minister aside from Paul Keating who abstained.

“Even with the division or splinters in the Labor Party, from Paul Keating or from different Ministers, they’ve got to be solid and firm about Israel’s right to self defence and its right to remove Hamas as a threat in the future,” he told Sky News Australia on Tuesday. “When Israel’s friends urge Israel to protect civilian life, as we have, it is critical that Israel listens,” the Foreign Minister told ABC Radio on Monday.

Ms Wong has maintained the Albanese government’s sentiment that Israel has the right to defence but added “the way it does so matters”. humanitarian aid into the war-torn enclave of Gaza
