Alaska federal Judge Josh Kindred was asked to resign or face impeachment after having ‘a sexualized relationship’ with a former law clerk, according to a judicial council investigation.

Joshua Kindred, at the time an attorney, testifying before the U.S. Senate Energy Committee in December 2015.

Former U.S. District Court Judge Joshua Kindred was told to voluntarily resign or face a rare judicial impeachment after a judicial council investigation found he conducted a sexualized relationship with a female law clerk and lied about it repeatedly to investigators, according to an extraordinary and scathing judicial misconduct order released Monday.

“The court and the public have a right to expect high standards of individuals holding the privileged position of a federal judge,” the report goes on to say. “We conclude that Judge Kindred’s integrity and temperament to serve as a judge are impaired because of his conduct.” Kindred was nominated by former President Donald Trump to Alaska’s U.S. District Court in 2019 and confirmed in 2020. At the time, he was just 42 – making him one of the youngest of a swath of powerful, lifetime federal judicial appointments made by the Trump administration.Sean Maguire is a politics and general assignment reporter for the Anchorage Daily News based in Juneau.
