A former Adams County sheriff’s deputy was sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for possessing child pornography.

Christopher Mark Haenel, 41, of Sheridan, Wyoming, also must serve five years of supervised release following his sentence, and owes thousands of dollars in restitution, the Department of Justice said Monday in a news release.

Law enforcement learned that Haenel was sharing child pornography through Kik, a social media platform, the release stated. A federal grand jury in Wyoming in May charged him with one count each of distributing and possessing child pornography. Haenel pleaded guilty to the possession count, court documents show. Prosecutors, as part of the plea agreement, dropped the distribution charge.
