Supernatural has unquestionably been the go-to resource for mythological content. The show about monster-fighting brothers was accessible and starred The WB's favorites of the time. However, it wasn’t the only game in town when it came to content of that kind.

A few years after Supernatural premiered, the Canadian series Lost Girl hit the airwaves. A highly underrated series that ran for five seasons, Lost Girl follows the antics of Bo , a member of the Fae community. Though not aware of it in the beginning, Bo is a succubus, a type of Fae who feeds on chi. Since she was adopted, she never knew about her lineage. All she knew was that any time she was in a sexual situation, she ended up killing her partner. One night after killing a date rapist, her activities get noticed by the local Fae government. Bo gets pulled into a world she never realized existed, and on her way to discovering who she is, she also gets some work done. ‘Lost Girl’ Is Not a Typical Supernatural Series Lost Girl functions like any good supernatural series with monster-of-the-week episodes and mythology arcs. While trying to figure out her past, Bo also works as an investigator, using her succubus powers to make a living. Lost Girl set itself apart from others of its kind by not putting moral constraints on its female characters. Bo is sexually liberated and established as bisexual in the first episode. Her sexuality isn’t subjected to the male gaze but instead an exploration of where Bo’s heart truly lies. Her best friend Kenzi similarly refuses to conform to anyone’s perception of her. A human con artist and thief, Kenzi also lives on the fringes of society and is the rare human allowed to know about the world of the Fae. Women are not just objects like in some of Supernatural's worst mistakes. They are complex and refuse to play by anyone’s rules but their own. These aspects make for an incredibly developed world, and is why Lost Girl works. After a pilot episode full of exposition, fans are free to experience the story as Bo does and find out all the secrets that have been hidden from her for her entire life. The Lore of ‘Lost Girl’ Was Highly Developed and Fascinating Any good supernatural series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer needs to have an established mythology, but Lost Girl goes the extra mile. The series redefines traditional supernatural myths by adhering to an entirely new set of rules. Bo is part of the world of the Fae, defined by their magical abilities. However, each class is different. Bo is a succubus who stems from the type of Fae who feeds on the life force of others. There are many other types of classes that Bo meets along her travels, including Dyson , a werewolf, and Tamsin , identified as a Valkyrie. Every episode, Bo meets another form of Fae, each derived from different mythologies, such as Norse and Celtic. Lost Girl truly earns its stripes, however, through the internal conflict in the Fae world. The Fae are divided between “Light” and “Dark.” Bo’s presence in the new city demands that she choose a side, but she ultimately chooses to be unaffiliated. This is forbidden by Fae law, but since no one can conclude where she came from, enticing her to one side or the other is all they can do. Bo’s independence and refusal to cater to anyone else’s whims defined the series, causing it to be a cult classic that tragically flew under the radar. A celebration of empowerment and sex positivity, Lost Girl didn’t overstay its welcome, deciding to conclude after five seasons. The show was groundbreaking, and there has been nothing like it since. Fans can stream Lost Girl on The CW app or buy it on digital platforms.
