Google has just revealed that it’s working with Warby Parker, Kering Eyewear and Gentle Monster to create more desirable smart glasses. Here’s what we know.

Google ’s I/O developer conference is in full swing and among the many announcements was one about the company’s next foray into smart glasses: they’re going to be stylish.Forget Google Glass . This time Google has set its sights on the chic market Meta has found so promising with its Ray-Ban Meta specs.

So, Google announced that the design tastes of the brilliant Warby Parker and Gentle Monster will be part of the story. “We know that glasses can only truly be helpful if you want to wear them all day. Today, we announced that we’re partnering with innovative eyewear brands, starting with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, to create stylish glasses with Android XR. And in the future, we look forward to working with more partners, like Kering Eyewear, to bring even more options to users,” A Kering spokesperson told me that the goal was to “create a beautiful, high-quality product that redefines how we experience both the real and digital worlds,” which also suggests that the look of the glasses will be key to Google’s products. The Kering CEO, Roberto Vedovotto, said, “Together, we are shaping a product that people will want to wear: a pair of masterfully designed, high-quality, stylish glasses that unlock the potential of artificial intelligence, while redefining the way of interacting with both the real and virtual worlds,” which also points in the same direction. Google’s smart glasses will use Android XR and will have cameras, microphones and speakers — not unlike the tech you’ll find on the highly successful Ray-Ban Meta glasses. But there’s more: “These glasses work in tandem with your phone, giving you access to your apps without ever having to reach in your pocket. And an optional in-lens display privately provides helpful information right when you need it. Pairing these glasses with Gemini means they see and hear what you do, so they understand your context, remember what's important to you and can help you throughout your day,” Google said. The latest peek showed how these glasses could work in regular situations, from messaging friends, getting directions, taking photos and doing live translation, which is also a Meta specialty.
