It has been described as a 'betrayal' - but it's not the first time that word has been heard in Skelmersdale
Locals had big hopes for the former Glenburn Sports College sit. It had been earmarked as the spot for a new train station serving the West Lancashire town.
The same word was used by then West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper when a funding bid to build a train station in Skelmersdale was knocked back last year. He said: "I come here every day because I'm a gambler so I go to the betting shop. I use the bus every day for that or to get to Southport but I go in the opposite direction.
Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said politicians should forget about those big projects and instead focus on improving what is already here. He said: "What we need is more buses and more direct routes. Sometimes you have to wait an hour between buses. What good is that if you've got to get an appointment? Or you want to get back quickly with your shopping?"
"Skem has a huge population, so why is Skem being left behind? There are always complains about children vandalising areas and not having job prospects here - but you've got to invest in the infrastructure!" The prospect of those two locations ever being linked by train feels near impossible given a funding bid to reinstate the Burscough Curves - submitted by Lancashire County Council, led by campaigners, given reassurance from then Prime Minister Boris Johnson and backed by multiple MPs and councils - was rejected in 2021.
Jake Berry, MP for Rossendale and Darwen echoed similar sentiments, arguing his constituents would be largely unaffected by the decision. But he said plans to improve east-west rail connections must remain a priority and that many see the bigger picture as being unfair to Northerners.
