Seward, who spent years in the studios of Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent says the project allowed her to relate her experiences indirectly and with a certain lightness.
Co-written with Matthias Dubureaux, the chapters are arranged in alphabetical order and range from cigarettes to selfies,to ‘Twinkle in the eyes.’ In a voice that she describes as her “alter-ego,” she paints a portrait of a heroine who is imperfect, attainable, and open to interpretation. Seward, in fact, illustrated all the portraits, too, including the cover depicting the late actress, Sylvia Kristel.

I talk about my mother whose appearance was super important for her, which made it important for me. This obsession, at least I did something about it; it became my profession. I was completely convinced that it was through my appearance that I could make up for my lack of confidence. I say I got my job at Chanel because of my look in a little Scottish tailleur, which I bought at Selfridges.
