A custom Google Maps layer shows public restrooms in New York City, but maybe Google should consider making it an app-wide feature.
We've all been there: you're out and about and suddenly need a public restroom. Google Maps can be a good resource for finding one nearby. If I'm in a new city, I usually try the closest Starbucks or department store. These are guaranteed to work, though you might have to buy something so you can use their bathroom. As for public bathrooms outside of stores and restaurants, it's not always that easy to find one.
The municipality of New York announced new public restroom initiatives this week. The NYC Parks department will build 46 public restrooms and renovate 36 others over the next five years. In all, NYC will offer 1,000 public bathrooms to locals and tourists. The Google Maps layer, available at this link, is part of the new 'Ur In Luck' initiative. You can also use the QR codes in the images above and below to get to the same custom map.
