Investigators said they observed the man hide four bags of fentanyl in his car then drive the car to Union, where he was stopped by authorities.
A foreign national confessed to participating in a scheme to distribute bulk quantities of fentanyl between Philadelphia and New Jersey, U.S. District Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced Tuesday. Hector Luis De La Cruz Nunez, 32, of the Dominican Republic pleaded guilty in Newark federal court to allegations of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute.
Two others were also charged in the conspiracy. Their trials are pending, according to federal officials. In February 2022, authorities learned of a drug-trafficking organization using a private residence in Philadelphia as a large-scale fentanyl production and distribution mill that was moving large quantities of the substance from Philadelphia into North Jersey communities, authorities said in a press release. Federal investigators said they observed Nunez exit the mill in Philadelphia on March 8, 2022 carrying large weighted bags and placing them into a secret compartment in his vehicle before driving the car into New Jersey. Officials stopped Nunez in Union and found four large, wrapped bricks containing about 100 packages of fentanyl each, totaling about 400 individual packages, authorities said.
