Foreign Minister Penny Wong has signalled a major policy shift for the government by suggesting Australia should recognise a Palestinian state.
"Recognising a Palestinian state - one that can only exist side by side with a secure Israel - doesn't just offer the Palestinian people an opportunity to realise their aspirations," Wong said. Her suggestion looks certain to trigger a fierce response from critical allies of Israel, such as the United States.
