The foreign-born population in the U.S. has grown by 15.6% over the last 12 years, reaching 46.2 million in 2022. This accounts for 13.9% of the total population, up from 12.9% in 2010. The population includes naturalized U.S. citizens, immigrants, foreign students, refugees, asylees, and unauthorized migrants.

Also included in the report was data showing rapid foreign-born growth in certain U.S. states. Delaware, North Dakota, South Dakota and West Virginia each saw their foreign-born populations increase by 40% or more since 2010. The report shows more foreign-born individuals are becoming educated, with more than 75% completing high school or higher in 2022, compared to 68.3% in 2010.
Major U.S. political figures have continued to spar over the growing migrant population. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. was among several other Democrats who blasted X owner Elon Musk in March for“You’re literally an immigrant,” the representative wrote.
