Although no heat waves are looming, a series of storm systems could bring thunder, lightning and strong winds to parts of New Jersey this week.

that is expected to drop down from the Great Lakes region and head across Pennsylvania Monday night.

Depending on how and where that system redevelops will determine whether severe thunderstorms with strong wind gusts — or just some periods of rain showers — take aim at the Philadelphia metro region and parts of central New Jersey and southern New Jersey Tuesday morning into early Tuesday afternoon, said Steven DiMartino, a meteorologist who heads NY NJ PA Weather.

Intense heat is gripping many areas of the United States this week, but the New Jersey region will not be getting as hot, according to weather forecasters.“It’s a very volatile situation,” DiMartino said in a forecast video Monday, noting the storm system has the potential to generate clusters of intense thunderstorms. But it’s possible the strongest storms could target areas south of New Jersey, like Maryland and Virginia.

For now, the National Weather Service’s regional office in Mount Holly is calling for a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the Philadelphia area and its New Jersey suburbs Tuesday morning, mainly before 11 a.m.Partly sunny skies are expected Monday afternoon, with highs in the mid-80s to upper 80s. There’s only a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms on Monday, the weather service said.
