Ford is gearing up to enter the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) market, offering EREV versions of its SUVs, crossovers, and the Super Duty pickup truck by 2027. This move comes as automakers grapple with the challenges of pushing battery-electric vehicles mainstream, particularly in the pickup truck segment. EREVs, which combine electric powertrains with gas-powered generators, are seen as a potential solution to bridge the gap between traditional gasoline vehicles and fully electric models.

Ford is reportedly planning to launch extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) across multiple segments later this decade. EREVs combine a battery and electric motors with a gas-powered generator to recharge the battery. Unlike traditional hybrids, the wheels are solely powered by the electric motors, making them true electric vehicles . The automaker is also investing in its 'skunkworks' electric vehicles , aimed at directly challenging Tesla and introducing more affordable EVs to the market.

Despite the popularity of pickup trucks in the U.S., battery-electric versions haven't fully resonated with buyers. They often command higher prices than their gasoline counterparts, and concerns linger about their towing and hauling capabilities. However, automakers are seeing potential in extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) as a solution. Ram and Scout Motors have already announced their EREV plans for the U.S., and Ford is now joining the growing list. Bloomberg confirmed on Tuesday that the Dearborn-based automaker is preparing to offer EREV versions of its SUVs, crossovers, and even the Super Duty pickup truck.EREVs operate with an electric powertrain, featuring a substantial battery and electric motors. They also incorporate a traditional internal combustion engine, but its role is solely to act as an onboard generator, recharging the battery. This provides drivers with the flexibility to recharge directly or rely on the gas generator when charging infrastructure is unavailable. EREVs are already gaining traction in China, where Chinese automakers sold approximately 623,000 units in 2024, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. The segment is set to launch in the U.S. this year, with Stellantis planning to introduce the Ram 1500 Ramcharger, which promises a range of around 690 miles. Ford's EREVs are slated for a 2027 debut. However, their arrival is anticipated to be crucial for the profitability of Ford's EV business, which has yet to achieve consistent success despite the company's early entry into the electric vehicle market. Ford's EV business unit, dubbed Model e, is projected to incur losses of around $5 billion in 2024. Even though sales of the fully electric F-150 Lightning are increasing, they represent a small percentage of the F-150 family's overall sales, which also include gasoline and hybrid models.
