Ford's Bronco Raptor 2023, an SUV that delivers sports car performance
all-terrain tires wrapped around 1-inch Dark Carbonized Gray Alloy Beadlock forged wheels coupled with the latest version of the HOSS system featuring FOX shocks and adaptive dampers, the Raptor boasts a 13-inch ground clearance nearly five inches more than standard. And it sprints from zero to 60 in under six seconds while shifting gears like a belt-driven machine gun. Oh, and it offers a 4,500 pound towing capability.
The standard interior option is black marine-grade vinyl with rubberized floors to make hosing off evidence of fun a lot easier. But if you want a touch of style, there is an optional blue leather-trimmed interior package with red accents featured throughout the cabin. If you upgrade the interior, go for the optional 10 speaker B & O sound system, which adds a subwoofer to drown out any Jeep loyalists trying to start a turf war.
On the road, or should I say off, the Bronco Raptor’s handling was surprisingly predictable and nimble. The big tires and tuned suspension gave the SUV a floaty feel as it bounced over uneven terrain at Baja 1000 speeds on undisclosed dirt roads.Still, having this much power and capability in one’s hands can affect the balance of confidence and ability.
The return to earth felt as dramatic as stepping off a street curb thanks to the go-anywhere tires and suspension. The Bronco took the abuse with a stoic stride and kept going without skipping a beat. The SUV’s wider stance also helped provide greater stability in the bends. Usually, one feels a touch of anxiety taking evasive maneuvers in boxy vehicles with a high center of gravity, but the sharp-clawed Bronco managed to remain poised and the right side up while going sideways.
The only drawbacks with the 2023 Ford Bronco Raptor is the potential risk of insufferable wind noise if you damage the removable roof panels. Its 13-15 mpg fuel economy could be seen as a drawback if you don’t enjoy visiting gas stations. And there is its near six-figure price tag, once you add options like Beadlock wheels, leather seats and lux interior package -- and that’s before tax.
