The Oscar winner speaks with Vanity Fair about the immense responsibility of anchoring the Venice-bound epic, about a Hungarian immigrant introduced to the ugliness of American power.

Just how much magnitude, you may ask? For starters, The Brutalist, helmed by Vox Lux director Brady Corbet , boasts a runtime of 215 minutes—the longest of this year’s festival competition. But then there’s the matter of the story: a sweeping immigrant tale following the extreme highs and lows experienced by Brody’s László Tóth, a successful architect who flees Hungary during WWII to settle in Philadelphia, and rebuild an entire life while his wife waits to join him.

Is this something you’ve been waiting for, a project with this much weight and meaning? It’s a really lovely question. Of course, I’m always striving for that. I’m always striving to find something that’s going to provide growth for me as a person and as an artist, and that has some overall evolution so that I’m forcing myself to take next steps. The whole world is very challenging right now. All pursuits of anything that’s meaningful to anyone is a great challenge.
