Justin Brooks, former director of the California Innocence Project, plans to shift his focus to an innocence project network he hopes to grow in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries

When Justin Brooks announced earlier this year that he was stepping down as longtime director of the California Innocence Project in San Diego, it was a surprise to many, including the lawyers and law students who know his work.

“My mission is to be kind of a pipeline, for whatever I have left in my career, for everything I’ve learned in the last 35 years practicing law in the U.S. to bring it to different countries,” Brooks said. “And what I’d also like to do is raise revenue for them in the same way I’ve done for the California Innocence Project.”

“Because we have been doing this work for so many years, we can help them start with something, not from the ground,” said Anaya, who explained that part of her role over the years has been training the various project leaders to manage themselves.“We meet with all the projects every month ,” Anaya said. “We help them listen to each other’s cases. We go through ideas together ... We bring in experts.

Brian Banks stands next to Justin Brooks and actor Greg Kinnear during interviews during the red carpet premiere for the movie “Brian Banks” in 2019. Last year, Brooks said, he went to an innocence conference in Phoenix where there were more than 1,100 people in attendance.
