The Rockets’ traditional luck with draft coin flips did not make it through Monday’s tiebreakers, with Houston coming away with a win and a loss.
The Rockets won the first flip, breaking a tie with the Spurs to to be considered with the league's second-worst record heading into the May 16 NBA draft lottery. That will not impact the Rockets’ chances to land the top pick or remain in the top four but will prevent them from having a chance to fall as far as to seventh.
The luck was not as good with the later coin flip. With the Clippers, Heat and Warriors in a tie, the Heat won the coin flip and will select with the 18th pick. The Warriors will pick 19th. The Clippers’ pick fell to 20th. The Rockets hold the option to swap the Milwaukee Bucks’ pick, at 30th in the first round, with the Clippers’ pick.
The Rockets, who won coin flips to allow them to select Ralph Sampson in the 1983 NBA draft and Hakeem Olajuwon the following season, will have the spot for their own pick determined with next month’s lottery in Chicago.The Rockets, Spurs and Detroit Pistons have the same chances to land the first pick or to remain in the top four , But each can fall as many as four spots from their initial draft position before the lottery.
