President Biden will this weekend undergo a rite of passage experienced by all but one of his predecessors since World War II: a meeting while in office with Queen Elizabeth II
Mr. Biden will become the 13th sitting U.S. president to meet the British monarch, probably at a reception on Friday of the leaders of the Group of Seven nations and then on Sunday for tea at Windsor Castle. In her nearly 70-year reign, the queen has proved an important weapon in Britain’s diplomatic armory, wooing U.S. leaders in good times and the not so good.
While still Princess Elizabeth, she and her husband Prince Philip were hosted in 1951 by President Harry Truman. Since becoming queen the following year, she has met every sitting president since Dwight Eisenhower, with the exception of Lyndon Johnson, giving her unequaled experience of successive occupants of the Oval Office.G-7 summit on England’s south coast
. She and her family will host a reception for G-7 leaders on Friday evening. The president will then on Sunday become the fifth U.S. leader the queen has received at Windsor Castle. It won’t be their first meeting: Mr. Biden met the queen while he was senator for Delaware about 40 years ago.
