Andy Huynh, of the San Diego Queer APIMEDA Coalition, and Amber St. James, co-founder of the drag production company Sisters of St. James Productions, talk about their experiences coming out as LGBTQ and the continued importance of National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11
and an activist who works to create spaces for education and training for people from marginalized communities to feel seen and know they bring value into the world. Huynh and St. James each took some time to talk about their own experiences coming out and why National Coming Out Day continues to hold relevance and significance.
To deny who you are is an injustice to yourself. If there is one thing you can do to make a difference, it is simply being present and aware of who you are, embracing who you are, loving yourself, and being proud of who you are. Being proud of my identity because not only is it National LGBTQ History Month, it’s also National Coming Out Day. When I think about National Coming Out Day and all of the anti-LGBTQ legislation that’s out there, I think back to the Stonewall riots and Marsha P.
I think what’s so interesting is that so many of us with these marginalized identities have the onus typically put on us to do that work [of coming out and sharing information about themselves]. As we’re talking about folks with a different identity that isn’t the dominant one, people think we’re just an open book where they can just ask any old thing and we’re going to educate like that’s our job. No.
