Kenya's only elephant orphanage turned one pandemic challenge into a win
A herd of elephants passes through an area southeast of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. Because orphaned elephants at Reteti are raised close to where they were rescued, some eventually are able to return to their herds.As the light warmed toward dusk, five people dressed in shades of green milled nervously around a baby elephant. The pandemic provided the push they needed to find that better option. Sourcing baby formula had become more difficult as lockdowns impeded travel from remote Reteti to cities that stocked the right products, and the collapse of the tourism industry meant that cost efficiency became more important than ever.Please be respectful of copyright. A knit blanket covers the intravenous catheter delivering fluids to an orphaned elephant. Estimated to be about a month old, she became separated from her herd after she fell into a well and couldn’t get out. Goats are corralled in a manyatta, or traditional Samburu family compound, near Reteti. Overgrazing by livestock has degraded much of the pasture in Namunyuk, but Reteti is working with pastoralists to implement sustainable grazing practices.Nturuyayi Lengees collects milk to bring to the sanctuary.The new formula has also been a success for the Samburu community, which sells goat milk to the orphanage.
