Rookie hits 3-run homer to get Astros back into clinching game against Yankees
Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña was named MVP of the American League Championship Series after sweeping the New York Yankees to advance to the World Series on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022, in New York.Peña is not an exibitionist or a showboat by nature, but the celebration felt suitable for a swing that catalyzed an Astros comeback in Game 4 to sweep the Yankees in the American League Championship Series and led the rookie shortstop to be crowned series MVP.
He was joking, but there was no shortage of love directed his way on Sunday. The Astros started a chant of “JP! JP!” as Peña lifted the hardware anointing him the most prized player on a dynastic team stocked with All-Stars, Gold Glovers, batting title holders and World Series Champions. Peña cannot match their accolades yet, but he has been welcomed with open arms in a clubhouse of men that strive to balance selflessness with perfection.
But in the third inning, New York starter Nestor Cortes, struggling through a groin injury, issued consecutive walks to Martín Maldonado and Jose Altuve. That brought Peña to the plate as the tying run. He banished a 3-1 pitch into the stands and sparked his team back to life.
