It’s no wonder. Fun is the intended vibe kids get when they walk into Newark’s 33,000-square-foot clubhouse on Avon Avenue. Just inside the front door is a large game room with a half dozen tabletop soccer, ping-pong and pool tables and a 5-foot-high Connect Four board. “When you’re a young kid growing up, you’re like, ‘Oh, my god, it’s a swimming pool!’” added Rouse. “And you can get lessons, and you can learn to swim, which I did.”
As CEO, Washington manages an annual club budget of $3.4 million and 70 full- and part-time staffers. Fees pay for about 30% of the budget. The rest comes from foundation and government grants, fundraising events, and individual donors. There’s a kitchen for cold meals kids eat after getting to the club from school or for lunch during the summer.
