Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame inducts large contingent
It was the 1980s all over again Thursday night as coach Charlie Goehring hangs out with his former athletes after his induction. South Houston was a regional and state powerhouse in cross country and track under Goehring's leadership in the 1980s.Although held in limbo the last two years because of the pandemic, when the Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame returned Thursday night, it roared back like never before.
“For our family and being a Pasadena guy, this is something that you dream about. They didn’t have this whenever we were growing up, but I definitely have Pasadena pride and for the people who recognized us, it’s very humbling. It makes me very proud,” said Dickinson High School head football coach John Snelson, who played his football at Sam Rayburn and then was Memorial’s head football coach from the 2006 through 2011 seasons, leading the Mavs to playoff berths all six seasons.
Snelson’s mother, Billie, who passed away in 2018, was known in Pasadena ISD circles for 39 years, coaching volleyball at Sam Rayburn and South Houston and teaching at Pasadena. “I’m still playing a little bit, but I’m kind of on the way out,” said the 64-year-old Schroeder and 1975 Rayburn graduate. Willingham was arguably the district’s best wide receiver his senior year, finishing with a whopping 48 receptions for 695 yards and 11 touchdowns. Then at the all-star game after graduation, Willingham rolled up 172 receiving yards over 11 receptions. He became a very valuable Houston Cougar as a receiver.
With a host of his former athletes on hand and all of them wearing South Houston cross country T-shirts, in red of course, Goehring had the time of his life hanging out with his former athletes after the ceremonies.
