Mother’s Day is all about the flowers for Ellen Hughes, and not the kind that are delivered on her doorstep. This is about her favorite annuals from the local garden center, planted with care around her home with — and this is the most important part, of course — her three sons at her side to handle the manual labor.
Or, she is quick to clarify, whichever of those sons happen to be home that day. They have embraced the family tradition and dote on their mother like all good kids do. They are also elite hockey players, and the second weekend in May is not a time when they want to be sitting around at the house with their skates hanging on a hook in the garage.
