Seven male, two female boxers earn spots on San Antonio team headed to Fort Worth
After his runner-up finish in the men’s senior novice, 139-pound finale at the San Antonio Regional Golden Gloves tournament, Orlando Tiger Davila set his sights on expanding his resume. In order to gain much-needed experience, he decided to participate in Corpus Christi’s Golden Gloves and an amateur show in the Alamo City. But then came the phone call that changed everything. A Texas State Golden Gloves coach was on the line with an invitation to try out for the team.
“I’ve fought at that weight before,” said Davila, whose brothers, Orlando Dragon and Orlando Bam Bam, share nearly identical names. “ likely will be bigger than me, but that just means I’ll have to get on the inside and take the fight to them.” A southpaw, Davila impressed the coaches during state Golden Gloves workouts after the regionals.
