A heat advisory for the Bay Area remains in effect for the East Bay and South Bay through Friday.

“It’ll be way too hot later,” Liz Garcia said. “It feels hot right now. ”on its climb. The temperatures were set to reach 100 in the hottest places and in the mid-90s in some of the more milder ones.
Along the water, the gauge was set to hit 80 . Areas of the North Bay, including Santa Rosa and San Rafael, were poised to set heat records. , only even hotter on the gauge and tougher on the bodies.
“I thought I’d get her out real little, but she doesn’t want to walk around the rose garden here,” Nabine Sabanovich, 67, of San Jose, said of her Australian Shepherd, Branislava. Sabanovich was at the Rose Garden in San Jose. It was 11 a.m. and 90.
“It’s too early for this,” she said. “It’s way too hot, man. I’ve got to go put the air conditioner on. It’s probably already 90 inside.
” Inside certainly was the place to be. A heat advisory Thursday remained in place until 11 p.m., and it was spread throughout the region. The National Weather Service called the heat risk moderate. In the far inland East Bay and South Bay, the advisory extends through Friday.
Heather Bilich, 59, and her daughter, Katie Rust, 17, stopped in shady spot in the Rose Garden while walking from their home to a market in search of cold items and drinks. Rust took the opportunity to run through the sprinklers. Bilich said it was “stressful” to feel such heat so early. On Friday, the heat is not expected to be anywhere near as intense.
NWS meteorologist Roger Gass said a southerly surge of low pressure with wind will start to break down the high pressure that has created the high heat. That influence was expected to begin along the Central Coast and move its way to San Francisco by Thursday night. The interior areas likely will have to wait until Friday night to feel it. By the weekend, the weather service said the marine layer should be restored.
The daytime will remain in the 90s in the hottest places through Saturday, and the places that don’t reach 90 likely will be in the upper 80s. In Oakland, high temperatures are expected to stay in the 70s through Saturday.
“It’s just so dry and so hot — I hate it,” Nate Phillip, 36, said as he ran in purple shorts, neon yellow shoes and no shirt along the banks of Lake Merritt, where the thermometer was expected to reach a high of 88 on Thursday. “It feels great to be outside, but it’s punishing. At least on the weekend, it’ll be a little more comfortable. It’s not like the unbearable, can’t-sleep-at-night heat.
” As the temperatures subside, the waves at the beach are expected to rise. The NWS announced Thursday that an El Nino has developed in the tropical Pacific Ocean and issued an El Nino advisory. Among the byproducts that could result are high tide flooding, which the weather service could become a higher risk along the Pacific Ocean.
Along with the announcement, the weather service also extended a coastal flood advisory through the early morning of June 17 that’s expected to be created by high tides. Waves at their highest tides are expected to cover some places by 1¾ feet in Bayshore locations along San Francisco and the San Pablo Bay by Saturday.
Near the San Francisco Bay, the advisory was set to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday and last through 3 a.m. on June 17, the same expiration time as the advisory in the North Bay that went into effect Wednesday. Safety officials reminded visitors to the beach to allow extra time for travel and not to drive around barricades or through several inches of water.
