Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve fouls off a ball during the second inning of a rehab assignment with the Sugar Land Space City Cowboys at Constellation Field on Friday, May 12, 2023 in Sugar Land.Getting back into game shape isn’t the issue for second baseman Jose Altuve. Timing is.
“He’s in great physical shape, his legs are in great shape, but it takes time to get your timing, and he doesn’t want to come back before he’s ready to help us,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday. “You don’t want him to come back and struggle, even though we’re dying to have him back right now.”
Altuve, who has yet to play this season for the Astros as he continues recovering from a broken thumb, began a rehab assignment on Tuesday with Class AA Corpus Christi. Altuve could be back in the lineup for the Astros as soon as Friday night at Minute Maid Park against the Oakland Athletics, but Baker said there’s still no timeline for his return.
“You don’t want timelines because then if he doesn’t make the time it’s, ‘What happens? ’” Baker said. “It’s a matter of him feeling good and a matter of his timing.” Altuve’s timing was off this past weekend in a short stint with AAA Sugar Land, when he was 1-for-13 before crowded houses 30 miles to the southwest of Minute Maid.Fellow Astros infielder Alex Bregman said Altuve’s batting practice with the Astros in the past week or so indicate the eight-time All-Star is almost ready to go — and the Astros need him. The reigning World Series champions are middle of the pack in MLB with a .241 batting averaging a quarter of the way through the season.
