Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers (mostly) aced his first offseason in New Jersey and made the Jets the NFL's most interesting team. None of that matters if they start losing.
Smith, who looked like he had been dragged out of bed for the occasion, was stopped on the red carpet by a reporter who was practically shaking with anticipation.“By the sound of it, no.” Smith replied.
Primetime game. Marquee opponent. Dream season possible. Rodgers might pretend like he’ll have to stifle a yawn, but he’ll feel the juice in the Meadowlands at 8:15 p.m. on Monday. He didn’t walk out of his darkness retreat committed to playing another season because he needs the money. He didn’t join the Jets because he always wanted to live inHe did it because he’s a competitive S.O.B. with something to prove.
In almost every way, those six months were perfect for Rodgers and the Jets. He turned the team’s reluctant turn on “Hard Knocks” into a five episode docuseries showcasing his unappreciated leadership skills. He exchanged, became a fixture at big New York City events and shared a big August night with Lionel Messi. Even when he talked about a UFO sighting in Bergen County, it seen as quirky and fun.
“I don’t think I need the resolve to be strengthened at all,” he said when asked if his belief in this team’s championship mettle had grown this summer. “I think a part of that is speaking things into existence, the idea of manifestation, and the other part of that is a realistic look at the locker room, knowing that there is anywhere from six to 12 teams every year that can and that we are one of those six to 12 teams.
