It comes after several clubs refused to cut the multi-million pound salaries of their players during the crisis , while opting to utilise the government’s generous job retention scheme for non-playing staff.

At a Downing Street press briefing, Hancock was asked if footballers should give up some of their wages to prevent clubs seeking to use tax payer money for those being furloughed.He said: ‘I think that everybody needs to play their part in this national effort and that means Premier League footballers too.
