Former Manchester City and France footballer Benjamin Mendy broke down in tears on Friday, as a UK jury cleared him of sex offences, ending a three-year court ordeal. | Sport24news

Mendy, 28, put his head on his knees and wiped away tears on hearing the verdict at the end of the three-week trial at Chester Crown Court in northwest England.

But jurors in that trial had been unable to reach a verdict on two other counts resulting in a retrial. Jurors also failed to reach verdicts on three counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault against Matturie by five other women. The prosecution had alleged that Mendy was a sexual"predator" who raped or sexually assaulted young women procured by Matturie at parties at his luxury home south of Manchester.

The trials meant that he missed Manchester City's treble last season of the English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Guinea's 2009 Conakry Stadium Massacre Trial ResumesGuinea's 2009 Conakry Stadium Massacre Trial ResumesThe landmark trial of Guinea's former president and 10 others, including former ministers, accused of being responsible for the massacre and rapes in the Conakry stadium in 2009, resumed on Monday, July 10, 2023, after being suspended for a month and a half. The trial is broadcast live on Guinea television and has kept the nation riveted. Prior to the trial's suspension - which was over a boycott by the defence counsel, with solidarity from the victims' lawyers, followed by a nationwide prison guard strike - the judges heard all 11 accused and moved to a second phase of the trial, during which they heard dozens of victims. The trial's resumption is a relief for victims and their families, who have long waited for justice for the massacre. On Monday, July 10, 2023, the proceedings took a surprise turn when the hearing of victims by the judges was interrupted to give the floor to one of the accused, former presidential guard member Captain Marcel Guilavogui, who requested to take the floor a second time. Guivalogui said the former president, Moussa Dadis Camara, along with others, planned and executed the 2009 crimes. The former president's lawyers have continued to deny his involvement.
