The Big Chill: Houston prepares for one of its coldest games in Independence Bowl
UH fans braved the cold and rain for the 2015 Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, but that day might end up balmy to what the Cougars will experience Friday in the Independence Bowl at Shreveport.SHREVEPORT, La. — Jeremy Branham plans to pack extra clothes for the sub-freezing temperatures in the forecast for Friday’s Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl.
The National Weather Service forecast for 2 p.m. Friday calls for 25 degrees. The temperature will continue to drop as the game crosses into the early evening hours. Joe Montana and Notre Dame rallied past Fred Snell and UH in the 1979 Cotton Bowl in Dallas, which remains the coldest game in Cougars program history with a 20-degree temperature at kickoff.If the forecast models hold, Friday’s game against Louisiana would be just the second time in UH’s 869-game football history that a game will be played in temperatures in the 20s.
Safety Gervarrius Owens joked he was basically “out here naked” with “no long socks, no long sleeves, no leggings and wearing a crop-top shirt” to acclimate to the cold temperatures.Tight end Christian Trahan, who grew up in Sulphur, La., about 3½ hours south of Shreveport, said the cold is just another obstacle in a season filled with many. Considered among the Group of Five favorites to play in a New Year’s Six bowl, the Cougars finished 7-5 during the regular season.
