Permission was granted on condition that strict guidelines are followed, with a hygiene officer appointed to each team, to prevent contagion of the virus. "There are real worries about infection risks," Jonas Baer-Hoffmann, the general secretary of global players' union FIFPRO, said. Plans to stage the 92 remaining games behind closed doors, reportedly at up to 10 neutral venues, would mitigate the financial damage.
"There is, however, currently no specific data available regarding the prevalence, nature, and behaviour of Covid-19-related illness in athletic individuals," it said.
