Kolbusz's road from the girls soccer team to the gridiron led to a heroic ending on Friday.
She played on the school’s soccer team, but decided to put on the pads when it became clear the gridiron squad needed a kicker for her senior year.In a game that featured big plays all over the place, that road nearly ended with Kolbusz as the goat, as a missed extra point seemed all but to doom Mount Olive.
The 10-1 Marauders advance to take on neighboring Roxbury, a 15-12 winner over Irvington, at Roxbury on Friday night. There is little doubt thousands of spectators from in and around western Morris County will descend on Succasunna for that one. “I’m just so happy. That we won, that I just got the chance,” said Kolbusz after the game. “It means so much to me to have helped our team win. I knew they’d try to ice me, and I just stayed within myself on that kick.” Trailing 28-27 with no timeouts and 1:40 to go, Mount Olive appeared left for dead until Lincoln Youtz – who had a terrific all-around game – blocked a punt to flip the field and set Mount Olive up at the Sayreville 38. A long 10 plays later, Mount Olive found themselves at the Bombers 2 with 10 seconds left to set up the winning kick. “That was just one of those classic games. Guys on both teams were making plays left and right. Sayreville is a tough football team that played a tough schedule. We just had the ball at the end,” said Mount Olive coach Brian O’Connor. The N.J.
