Derion Morris believes in himself and the direction of East Chicago Central’s program.
East Chicago Central sophomore Derion Morris has moved to running back after starting the season at quarterback.
Morris made the switch at halftime of the Cardinals’ victory against Bowman, their first under first-year coach Corey Bailey, last week. He expects to line up at running back again this week when East Chicago Central plays Munster, with senior Marquice Winters, an erstwhile wide receiver, at quarterback.“Winning on homecoming, it felt good for me personally and for my teammates. But I want to do it against a team I know people don’t think we’ll beat. This game, I’m excited for this game.
That experience factor is among the reasons Bailey turned to Morris at quarterback when junior Yamauree Wallace, the starter last season, decided not to play.“We had to move some people around, and Morris stepped up from the start,” Bailey said. “He said, ‘I’ll do it. I’ll take the load.’ “We didn’t have a quarterback, and it was either I play it or someone else who genuinely really didn’t know how to play it plays it. So I might as well man up to it. You can’t get your way every time. But the switch happened. I waited patiently, then the switch happened.”“He helps everybody out,” Winters said of Morris. “He gets me passes, he gets our teammates passes. He’s been playing running back growing up, so him going back there, I feel like it’s a good spot for him.
