Research suggests that ultra-processed foods are becoming the dominant food source for adolescents.

Young people in the UK get up to 66 per cent of their calorie requirements from junk food , new research shows.

Ultra-processed foods include those manufactured at an industrial level and contain artificial additives like colourings, sweeteners, preservatives and emulsifiers. UPFS range from, but are not limited to soft drinks, powdered meals, mass produced baked goods, spreads & margarines, ready meals and sweetened cereals.

Findings published today in European Journal of Nutrition found that an average 66 per cent of adolescents’ energy intake came from UPF consumption during this period. However, there was a slight decrease from 68 per cent to 63 per cent between 2008/09 and 2018/2019.
