What's next? But after his wife got sick eight years ago and cost-of-living pressures became tough on a pension, he needed help to provide for his family, which included five children and 15 grandchildren."Years ago when I had a young family, I wanted to provide for them and sometimes I couldn't and it was a really hurtful thing," Mr Weckert said.

"We had been really down and out, we didn't have a vehicle, we've been on the pension for 10 years. If I hadn't of asked for help, we would've been really struggling.Ballarat Foodbank manager Katrina Gibbs said the local pop-up markets will now transition to the food centre in Mitchell Park, where 23 local charity partners can access free fresh, chilled, and frozen food.

At the beginning of 2023, 50,000 Victorians asked for help from Foodbank. That figure is expected to jump to 70,000 this Christmas. This means they skipped meals or ate less because they could not afford enough food. Last year the food relief organisation found "more than the total number of households in Melbourne and Sydney combined" were experiencing "concerning levels of food insecurity".The ABC is supporting Foodbank Victoria for this year's ABC Gives Appeal to bring attention to people experiencing food insecurity in Victoria.Right now, there are Australian households who are going hungry. And many of them are families just like yours.
