New York residents will continue to receive payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program over the next three days before the program wraps up for November.
The Empire State sends out food stamps from the first of the month until the ninth of the month. For New York City SNAP recipients, the benefits are sent out over 13 days that are not holidays or Sundays during the first two weeks of each month. These dates vary from one month to the next, so the city publishes a six-month schedule showing the exact availability dates.For the rest of the state's SNAP accounts, benefits are sent out based on the last digit of the household's case number.
A household of one can receive a maximum amount of $291, a household of five can receive a maximum of $1,155, and a household of eight can receive a maximum of $1,751. For each additional person, a household can receive a maximum of $219. These amounts are based on the recent cost-of-living adjustments for 2023-2024.
The average payment per household member per month in New York is $196. Approximately 2.84 million people, or 14% of New York's population, receive SNAP benefits.SNAP benefit recipients will see the amount transferred to a prepaid electronic benefits transfer card. In New York, the EBT card is called the"New York EBT card." The New York EBT card works similarly to a debit card and can be used at grocery stores, farmers markets, and some online retailers.
The money is intended for purchasing groceries, snacks, fresh food, seeds, and plants. SNAP benefits cannot be used to purchase nonfood household items, tobacco products, alcohol, pet food, or prepared foods.
