California is set to end its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program distribution for the month of September by this weekend.

Families who receive SNAP, or food stamps, can see benefits up to $1,691. The federal program, called CalFresh in the Golden State, begins issuing payments on the first of the month and ends Sept. 10. Payments will be distributed depending on the recipient's case number. For example, if a case number ends in 1, California beneficiaries saw their CalFresh benefits on Sept. 1. If a case number ends in 2, CalFresh benefits were available on Sept. 2. By Sept.

The exact payment amount a household will receive is dependent upon multiple factors, including household size, income limits, and additional assets, with the average payment in California per person coming in at $196 per month. The maximum payment for a household of one is $281, while the maximum SNAP amount for a household of four is $939 and the maximum amount for a household of eight is $1,691. For each household member past eight, the program adds up to $211.

For most California households, the monthly gross income must be at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. For a family of one, there's a monthly income limit of $1,473. A household of three's limit is $2,495, and a household of six's limit is $4,029.Households with an elderly or disabled member have an eligibility limit of 200%. For a family of one, there's a monthly income limit of $2,266.

Around 13% of California's population receives CalFresh assistance, amounting to nearly 5 million Californians each month, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Additional information on how to apply for SNAP or monitor CalFresh benefits can be found on the government portal through the California Department of Social Services.
