Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot faces scrutiny over his performance after a disappointing season and a costly move for quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Addressing fans at a training camp practice this summer at Seckinger High School in Buford, Ga., Fontenot spoke confidently, outlining plans for playoff appearances, hosting playoff games, and passionate fan support in opposing stadiums. He envisioned success. Now, others in the NFL are reportedly questioning whether Fontenot will get the opportunity to deliver another speech next summer.
Some league insiders are speculating about the future of Atlanta GM Terry Fontenot following the $90 million Kirk Cousins experiment, which lasted only 14 games, and the lack of a significant playoff push since he took over in 2021. Atlanta hasn't reached the playoffs since 2017, and a difficult task lies ahead this season after Sunday night's loss to the Commanders. The Falcons have recorded a 7-10 record in each of Fontenot's first three seasons, leading to the dismissal of head coach Arthur Smith. While the two were brought in together, Atlanta's ownership decided to retain Fontenot. This past offseason, Fontenot took a bold approach, signing four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins to a four-year contract worth up to $180 million. As Fowler mentioned, Atlanta essentially paid $90 million guaranteed for 14 games, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Fontenot's inconsistent draft history, having selected high-profile offensive players within the top eight picks in each of his four drafts but missing on several Day 2 selections, combined with the Cousins signing, has cast doubt on the direction of Atlanta's organization under his leadership. The Falcons (8-8) must defeat the Carolina Panthers (4-11) at noon Sunday and hope the New Orleans Saints (5-11) upset the NFC South-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7) on the road. If both scenarios unfold, Atlanta will win the division and secure the No. 4 seed in the playoffs. If not, the Falcons will miss the postseason for the seventh consecutive year. Regardless of the outcome, Atlanta is not where it was projected to be when Fontenot made his optimistic remarks in July
