“Both of my sons are veterans. One’s retiring this month from the Navy. The other served in Baghdad for fifteen months and now works for Social Security, but who knows how long he will have that job,” Marsha Middleton told the gathered crowd. Middleton, of Gulf Shores took a turn on the Baldwin County Democratic Party microphone Thursday. She was one of dozens of protesters who showed up ahead of a scheduled appearance by Republican US House Representative, Barry Moore. Moore was the keynote speaker at South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Series luncheon…a private, ticketed event. Protesters came bearing both verbal and written messages. “I believe in America. I’ve voted for republican. I’ve voted for democrats, but I believe in the constitution and I believe in America and I don’t believe in concentration camps and I don’t believe in Elon Musk. I didn’t vote for that man,” protester, Laura Pfizenmayer said.“I believe in the truth and I think we get the truth from Barry Moore. That’s why I supported him,” said Paulette Fedor. “I’m here to support Barry Moore who’s supporting our constitution. He’s protecting Alabama from becoming another California. You know, women are losing their rights,” added another Moore supporter who only wanted to be known as Rhonda.Moore largely ignored the Democratic protest, instead waving to his supporters who had assembled on the opposite side of the entry. Once inside, I asked the Baldwin County Democrats Executive Chair, Robyn Monaghan if she thought he heard their message. “I hope he got the message,” Monaghan said. “Do I really think that that’s going to change the way Moore continues to vote for everything Trump tells him to vote? No, I don’t, but I do think that we can at least send him a message that we are constituents, and this is the way we feel.” Protesters’ concerns ranged from healthcare to education and a variety of other D.O.G.E.-related cuts to the government. Moore said his message to south Baldwin businesses was to get to know him and his team now that he has offices set up in both Baldwin and Mobile counties. He said that goes for his supporters and critics alike. “I’m happy to have dialogue with them on the issues itself, but personal attacks or calling people names, that has no place in our office, no place in this country,” Moore said.
