The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is exploring the outsourcing of custodial services as a cost-saving measure to address its budget deficit. The proposal has sparked concerns from current custodians and their union, who argue that outsourcing could lead to a decline in service quality and impact employee morale.

Current custodians in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District (FNSBSD) are hired and directly employed by the district, represented by the Education Support Staff Association (ESSA). Concerns have been raised about the potential outsourcing of custodial work as the district seeks to address its budget deficit .

Steven Bonfoey, a custodian at North Pole Elementary School, expressed that teachers have voiced their opposition to contractors in classrooms, emphasizing that custodians often go beyond their paid duties. Andy Degraw, Chief Operations Officer for FNSBSD, cited high vacancy rates - 30 at the start of the school year, a two to three-fold increase compared to previous years - and the financial benefits of outsourcing (avoiding salaries and benefits) as reasons for the consideration. April Johnson, president of ESSA, stated that the district claims outsourcing could save $3 million annually. She noted that current employees are disheartened and demoralized by the prospect of job cuts, and acknowledge that the high vacancy rates can negatively impact employee morale
