Flying Fish soars past Hansa Pilsener on list of SA's most valuable brands as flavours win favour | Businessinsider

Flying Fish is ranked as one of South Africa's most valuable alcohol brands, having recently overtaken its stablemate stalwart, Hansa Pilsener, in a battle between new flavours and traditional beers.

The South African Breweries' Flying Fish is fast becoming one of the country's top alcohol brands.

The total value of South Africa's top 30 brands has jumped by 21% to $34.9 billion, with banks, telecommunications providers, and retailers seeing the biggest increases. These gains were revealed in the latestWhile most categories have grown over the past year, the overall value of alcohol and insurance brands declined slightly. This decrease is most noticeable among the South African Breweries old guard, like Castle and Hansa Pilsener.

Hansa Pilsener, launched by SAB in 1975, has had a much steeper decline in recent years, dropping from 15th position in 2019 to 29th in 2022, barely remaining in Kantar BrandZ's top-30 ranking. Hansa Pilsener's total brand value nearly halved during this time. The latest Kantar BrandZ report places Flying Fish at 21, with its brand value surging by 33% over the past year. Hansa Pilsener, on the other end of the scale, dropped in value by 34%.
